About THE SICALAO RIVER CANYON
THE "GRAND SICALAO CANYON" Carved by the action of the turbulent river emanating from the Cordilleras millions of years ago, a canyon was formed, splitting massive limestones into halves, creating deep karst and fissure of what is known locally today as the "Abot" (the Hole). The river with no more than a couple of meters wide between these gargantuan limestone rocks has a massive depth of more than 30 meters making the place a subject for geologists and hydrologists. Trouts and other fishes abound the stream before flowing freely into Zinundungan river tributary and finally into the Cagayan river, the longest in the country. Truly, the adventure never ends in Sicalao, considered as the last frontier in the municipality of Lasam, Cagayan, our very own. Enjoy!
Pole fishing is fun as local fishes thrive in the calm, almost still waters of the canyon. Rowing a boat, a makeshift raft or canoe amid the 500-meter long river canyon is exciting while seeing above you the towering old limestone rocks. Above these rocks, you can have a picnic under the trees and shrubs while grilling your fresh catch. Yummy!
From Lasam Municipal Hall as the starting point, rent or ride a tricycle going to Barangay Sicalao and alight to the place called "Abot". You can get local guides at the Barangay Hall. Payment is not compulsory but heartfelt gratitude is at your discretion. There, you'll hike for about 30 minutes to reach the grandeur of the Sicalao river canyon.
